The civil wars that ravaged the Roman world in the first century BC resulted in the transformation of the Roman state (res publica) into a monarchical system of government headed by an emperor. This course examines the impact of the imperial monarchy on politics, society, and culture of the Roman world, from administration and decision-making in Rome and the provinces to art and architecture, poetry and drama, and the writing of history.
