School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics · ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences
This course will explore the city of Rome through the analysis of its cultural representations as well as on-site visits to culturally significant neighborhoods, cultural sites, museums and film locations. Taking the city as an analytical object, the course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Rome's complex history and its role in constructing, reinforcing and re-inventing Italian cultural and political identity. To this end, the course will question widespread assumptions and dominant narratives concerning Rome as a global tourist destination and as the cultural and political capital of Italy. Topics covered in the course include the legacy of colonial history, migration, and youth marginalization. The methodological approach and the material covered in this course will develop students' understanding of Italian history, culture and identity, providing them with a deeper insight into Italy's complex past and present. Travel Approval: Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required, the travel to a high risk destination form and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate. Disclaimer: Applicants are advised that due to circumstances beyond the University's control (for example, specific international security concerns and international health crises) it may not be possible for students to commence or complete this course as advertised.
