ANU College of Science and Medicine
This course is designed for students who wish to study chemistry at a level beyond a standard major in Chemistry at years 11 and 12. International students are not able to enrol in this course. Topics covered in year 11 will include: • Electronic Structure involving a detailed investigation of s, p, d and f atomic orbitals. • Valence Shell Electron Shell repulsion Theory (VSEPR). Coordination numbers 2-6 • Molecular Orbital (MO) Theory • Bond Hybridisation • Advanced thermochemistry including the entropy and Gibbs Free Energy and the relationship between Gibbs and equilibrium. • Enzyme (Michaelis Menten) and polymer kinetics • Molecularity Topics covered in year 12 will include: • Advanced organic chemistry including a detailed study of functional groups and their reactivity • Mechanisms (E1 and E2) for selected organic reactions including the use of arrows to indicate electron movement • Advanced instrumental methods including NMR, MS, GC and electromagnetic spectroscopy • Electrosynthesis • Relationship between the mass of material that is deposited when different currents are applied This is Part A of a 2 part course.
