Modern Chinese 1: Spoken (CHIN1012) is designed for absolute beginners who are (near-) native speakers of English. It introduces the basics of standard modern Chinese language (Putonghua), including Chinese phonetics (sounds and tones), basic vocabulary and simple sentence structures associated with various communicative topics. Listening and speaking skills are trained intensively with a focus on ‘here and now’ and everyday conversation exchanges. Related Chinese cultural knowledge and practices are introduced as part of language education. The integration of ‘structure, function and culture’ along with emphasising sounds, lexical and syntactical structure and cultural awareness characterises the course. Chinese written scripts are not tested in the assessments. This course shares the textbook and one weekly lecture with CHIN1013 Modern Chinese 1 Written. The shared lecture will introduce common grammar points and sentence structures. CHIN1012 has another more specialised weekly lecture focusing on spoken and listening skills.

This may results in a penalty such as reduced grades or failure of the course. Students are not permitted to enrol in a language course below one that they have already successfully completed, except with permission of the language and/or course convenor.
