A detailed understanding of the water resources available in different environments, how water moves through the environment, and the management of these water resources are fundamental to the practice of environmental engineering. In this course, students will investigate the foundational elements of how water moves over the surface of the land, including precipitation, evapotranspiration and streamflow, and relevant monitoring and analytical techniques. The second major component of the course is design and modelling for various water engineering applications, including design flood estimation (which is useful to inform the design of flood-proof infrastructures), rainfall-runoff processes, stream water quality, and design of water distribution systems. In response to the global tension between human activity and the natural environment (including the hastening impacts of climate change), the course will investigate the impacts of climate change on water resources and water management under competing demands. This course will provide an important focus on indigenous perspectives and contributions to this field of study. Students will be able to draw on course materials that provide diverse gender, cultural, and geographical perspectives on these topics.

Approximately 130 hours per semester. An indicative plan of the hours of contact and self-study is as below: - 12 weeks of classes, including 2 hours of lectures and 2 hour of tutorial each week - 2 hours for each of the five online quizzes, including preparation, working on the quiz and going through feedbacks - 2 hours per week to preview/review lectures and visit designated reading materials - 4 hours per week over the duration of the two team design projects to work in teams and independently on the projects. This time can include 2 hours to meet and work with in teams, and 2 hours of individual work such as research and report writing. - 1 hour per week to attend the weekly consultation sessions (by appointment) to discuss any outstanding question on course materials, assignments. Work Integrated Learning Projects The two design projects are designed to replicate the professional engineering problems and team-working environment in the industry. Other Information Course will be offered from Semester 1, 2023 onwards.
