School of Culture History and Language · ANU College of Asia and the Pacific
This course introduces an intermediate level of Hindi listening and reading comprehension skills as well as spoken and written communication skills. Students will learn how Hindi speakers use a range of variant forms alongside standard Hindi in their speech, and they will learn how this variation shapes the way Hindi speakers express identity. The skills needed to read and understand long and complex Hindi sentences are developed through reading a variety of text genres such as film and news magazine articles, modern short stories and Indian mythological stories. Cultural contexts covered in the texts include topics such as the Hindi film industry, caste and community identities, accounts of India before, during and after independence, Hindi versions of stories from the Indian epics and the impact of contemporary changes in India. For ANU students, this course has a strong emphasis for in-person learning, with the additional participation of online students coming through Open Universities Australia (OUA). This makes our classroom highly interactive and diverse. This course takes full advantage of digital tools and authentic audio-visual materials from India to give you an immersive experience of Hindi language and Indian culture.
